Diabetics and Pedicures

If you are a Diabetic you know how important it is to take care of your feet. If you did not know this, then let me explain why its important to see, either your podiatrist or a certified "Beauty Safe Salon" Aesthetician.

Always check your feet

Firstly, whats the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is (formerly called juvenile-onset or insulin dependent diabetes) The body immune system destroys the cells that release insulin, eventually eliminating insulin production from the body. Without insulin, cells cannot absorb sugar (glucose) which they need to produce energy.
  • Type 2 diabetes (formerly called adult-onset or non-insulin-dependent diabetes) can develop at any age. It most commonly becomes apparent during adulthood, but a number is rising in children too.  In type 2 diabetes, the body isn't able to use insulin the right way. This is call insulin resistance, as type 2 diabetes gets worse, the pancreas may make less and less insulin.
How can diabetes affect your feet?

It can cause two major problems:

Diabetic Neuropathy - is an uncontrolled nerve damage to your legs and feet, this leads to not feeling heat, cold or pain. This lack of feeling is called "sensory diabetic neuropathy".
If you do not feel a cut or sore on your foot, it may become infected. Also the muscles of the food may not function properly, because the nerves that make the muscles work are damaged.  This could cause the foot not to aline properly and create too much pressure in one area of the foot.
10% of people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers because of nerve damage and peripheral vascular disease.

Peripheral vascular disease affects the flow of blood. Without good blood flow, it take longer for a sore or cut to heal. If you have an infection that will not heal because of poor blood flow, you are at risk of developing ulcers or gangrene.

PREVENTION:

Proper foot care can help prevent these common foot problems and/or treat them before they case serious complications.

Here are some tips for good foot care:

  • Take care of yourself and your diabetes. Follow your health care provider's advise.
  • Check your feet every day for sores, blisters, redness and calluses.
  • Wash your feet in warm water every day, using a mild soap. Make sure of the temperature wit your elbow first before you soak your fees. Dry your feet well, especially between the toes.If the skin on your feet is dry, keep it moist by applying lotion after you wash and dry your feet. Do not put lotion between your toes. Your doctor can tell you which type of lotion is best to use.
  • Keep the blood flowing to your feet, put your feet up when sitting, wiggle our toes and move your ankles several times a day, and don't gross you legs for long periods of time.
  • Make sure you contact your doctor for advise and treatment if you have any foot problem that are getting worse or not healing.
  • Make sure your doctor examines you feet during each check-up. An annual foot exam should be preformed that includes an inspection of the skin, a check of the temperature of your feet and an assessment of the sensation of the foot.
  • Finally and most importantly come and see Anita at Cameo Spa every 4 to 6 weeks for a pedicure.

Pedicures include:
Warm soak;
Gently soothing out corns and calluses with an emery board;
Trim your toenails and then smooth the toenails down with a  nail file;

MILIA are not a form of ACNE

If you've had milia, you likely wondered if they were some kind of pimple. While many people mistake the tiny, pearl-like bumps for acne, they are not the same thing. One of the easiest ways to identify milia bumps are by how they feel.
Unlike acne, milia are rather firm, and squeezing has little to no impact on them. Also unlike acne, these bumps can show up around the eyes and on parts of the face where there aren't active oil glands. Milia also don't have the pain associated with acne when a pimple forms and then becomes inflamed and sore.

Note: If you have yellowish bumps around your eyes and on your eyelids, they may not be true milia (which are typically translucent flesh to white). You may instead be dealing with a skin growth known as a xanthoma. These bumps are common in people who have high cholesterol or high triglyceride levels.

So How Did I Get Milia, Anyway?

Milia occur when dead skin cells get trapped under the skin's surface, forming small, hard cysts.
Adults can get two forms of milia: primary and secondary.
Primary is the type seen in babies, caused by skin cells that build up because they just didn't exfoliate properly.
Secondary milia happens when a skin condition that leads to blistering actually damages the pore lining. Burns or severe rashes can increase the number of skin cells trapped under the skin's surface.
Sun damage is also a contributing factor to milia because it makes skin rough and leathery, so it's more difficult for dead cells to rise to the skin's surface and shed normally.

How to Treat and Prevent Milia
Because milia often go away on their own without treatment, being patient and waiting it out is an option—but waiting is definitely not for everyone!
Primarily, it is critical that you not squeeze, scrape, poke, or in any other way physically try to remove the milia from your face as you would a pimple. Because milia are hard and under the skin's surface, these methods are unlikely to help. Instead, you wind up irritating and damaging the skin surrounding the cyst. Some people have even scarred themselves trying to dig out milia—and there's no question a scar will last longer than any milia bump!

Of course, you also can see a skin expert, who can tell you which type of milia you have. Secondary milia might require the use of a hypodermic needle to remove the cyst, or cryotherapy. If your milia don't respond to an exfoliating treatment after several weeks, consider making an appointment with your aesthetician or dermatologist.

Prevent:
Although not a lot can be done to prevent milia, maintaining a suitable skin-care routine certainly helps minimize the chance of them appearing. Because secondary milia can be caused by sun damage, always use a  moisturizer with at least SPR 15 to protect your skin every day, and give those annoying white bumps less of a reason to set up shop on your face!
Yes, milia is a real pain to put up with, but there are things you can do to treat it. Remember: Patience, daily exfoliation, sun protection, and resisting the temptation to take matters into your own hands can go a long way to having clearer, bump-free skin sooner!

Cameo 3 Step Skincare Program

I have been an aesthetician for a while now and have dealt with all age groups, with various skin types that have various skin issues. My passion is research, experimentation and looking into new products and formulas that may help.  By no means will I say I'm an expert in my field, as there is a lot to learn with many new and extraordinary skin ailments popping up all the time.
I have found maintenance, especially for our skin, is our third step to healthy living.
If you look good, you feel good and visa versa. This is yet to be proven wrong :)

So here is my Three Step Skincare Program;

Diet:

Skin needs nutrients from the in side and out.
From the inside we need to drink plenty water and follow a balanced diet.
From the outside we need to keep our skin clean, moisturized and protected at least twice a day (see maintenance)

Exercise:
As our skin is the largest organ that covers 100% of our body, it's also the first place you will notice environmental or emotional changes to your body, such as allergies, illness and stress.  Skin will show these by either changing colour or breaking out into hives or acne.
Exercise helps the body with stress, also keeps the body healthy and may help with most allergies and illnesses. So go for a walk .....

Maintenance:
Skin cells turn over and rebuilds every 7 to 40 days depending on age:
Children skin cells rebuilds every 7 days;
Teenagers rebuilds every 14 days;
Young adults (ages 20 to 30) rebuilds every 21 days;
Adults (Ages 30 to 45) every 21 to 30 days and
Adults (Ages 45 to 85) every 30 to 40 days
So the older we get the longer it takes to heal.

In order to keep your skin young and optimal it is very important to keep it maintained.
Every morning: clean, moisturize and protect it with sunblock;
Every evening: clean off all make-up, and moisturize before you go to bed.

Teenagers and Young adults will need to Exfoliate twice a week, however as we get older and our skin takes longer to rebuild, it may need more help in keeping the skin looking younger.

Adult skin does not only need to Exfoliate once a week, but also needs introduction to collagen, elastin, vitamins and minerals to the maintenance program.
To make sure you do so correctly and use the right formula you will need to see a licence aesthetician.

RECOMENDATION FOR PROLONGED AGEING:
Skin care treatment (Facial) every 6 weeks;
Skin resurfacing treatment (Microdermabrasion or Peel) twice a year.

RECOMENDATION FOR ACNAIC SKIN:
UV Treatment once a week until clear;
Maintenance once a month.
Skin resurfacing treatment (Microdermabrasion or Peel) four times a year.

Also for other problematic skin such as;
Age spots, sun damage also known as Hyperpigmention;
Spider veins and Rosacea;
Wrinkles and fine lines.
